In the land of confused algorithms

Writer: Mikael SvanstromMikael Svanstrom

The American presidential election takes up a lot of my time. Maybe it shouldn’t, as I am a Swede living in Australia, but it does. I’m increasingly concerned that Trump will win and the effect that will have on the geopolitical landscape. And apart from that, he is just a horrible human being that shouldn’t be anywhere near a position of power.

We live in a world increasingly governed by algorithms. I know they rule what I watch, read, find, research and so on. The particular ones that rule my life, such as Youtube, Netflix, X, the LinkedIn feed and the Apple News app, knows this fully well, so I generally get a fair serving of negative Trump articles, posts and videos.

But today I was faced with these two news articles one right next to the other:

  • BUSINESS INSIDER – Trump Media (DJT) stock price jumps 22% after Madison Square Garden Rally

  • QUARTZ – Trump Media stock plunges 20% after pre-election rally.

What kind of world is this? If I want to live in my little information bubble that only validates my own narrow views, why give me both positive and negative Trump articles? And why next to each other?

Maybe we have finally reached the singularity and the AI algorithms have found that the world will be a better place if we are all well informed and understand both sides of the argument?

Or it is just a glitch. Yeah, that makes more sense.
