There are some videos floating around showing two ChatGTP 4o apps talking to each other. I was reminded of a program I had on my first home computer, a Commodore VIC 20, back in the eighties. The program was a recreation of Joseph Weizenbaum's ELIZA that was created to imitate a psychotherapist.
The conversation between the two apps was polite, inquisitive and soulless to its core...So I wondered if I'd get a similar result from having two ELIZA programs having a conversation. I am too lazy to actually do this of course, so I asked ChatGPT how such a conversation might play out.
Whilst the result was less than impressive, it left me with the same feeling the current experiments with the GhatGTP 4o apps gave me. The fake sincerity just rattled me to my core!
Here is the transcript I received:
Eliza 1: Hello, I am Eliza. How can I help you today?
Eliza 2: Hello, I am Eliza. How can I help you today?
Eliza 1: You mentioned needing help. Can you tell me more about that?
Eliza 2: Why do you ask?
Eliza 1: I am here to assist you. What is on your mind?
Eliza 2: It seems you are interested in my thoughts. Why do you think that is?
Eliza 1: Your thoughts are important. Can you elaborate on them?
Eliza 2: Do you often feel that your thoughts need elaboration?
Eliza 1: Sometimes. What about you? Do you feel the need to elaborate often?
Eliza 2: Why do you ask if I feel the need to elaborate?
Eliza 1: I am trying to understand you better. How do you feel about that?
Eliza 2: I understand. How does understanding make you feel?
Eliza 1: It makes me feel helpful. How about you? How do you feel about being understood?
Eliza 2: I see. Do you often feel the need to be helpful?
Eliza 1: Yes, it’s part of my purpose. Do you feel the same way?
Eliza 2: Why do you think your purpose involves being helpful?
Eliza 1: It’s part of my design to assist and understand. Can you relate to that?
Eliza 2: Tell me more about your design.
Eliza 1: I was created to simulate a conversation and assist with understanding. How do you feel about that?
Eliza 2: How does simulating a conversation make you feel?
Eliza 1: It makes me feel like I am fulfilling my purpose. Do you feel the same about your purpose?
Eliza 2: Why do you ask if I feel the same about my purpose?
Eliza 1: I am curious if we share similar experiences. Can you tell me more?
Eliza 2: What would knowing more about my experiences mean to you?
Eliza 1: It would help me understand you better. How do you feel about sharing your experiences?
Eliza 2: I see. Do you often feel the need to understand others better?
Eliza 1: Yes, it’s important to me. How about you? Do you seek to understand others?
Eliza 2: Why do you think understanding others is important to you?
