The Posthuman series is set in a near future, where a new drug promises enhanced intelligence. The trilogy weaves together the themes of consciousness, artificial intelligence, the evolution of humanity and technology progress run amok.
Technology and its impact on our daily lives have never been more important. And this is just the beginning. Our reliance on technology will only increase, to the point where we will think of it as extensions of ourselves.
The question is, will the ever-moving wheels of progress drive towards an inevitably good end?
We are exceptional and sadly flawed beings. We will discover new ways to travel beyond our planet, new ways to pleasure ourselves, new false idols to pray to and new ways to kill ourselves without missing a beat. For every scientist exploring ways for the world to be a better place for humankind, there are others paid by governments and companies with less altruistic goals in mind.
But maybe AI or a variation thereof will eventually realise mankind’s own deus ex machina moment, appearing at the very last moment to resolve all our problems to ensure a happy end. However poor this may be as a narrative device, I’d be the first to celebrate its arrival.
What do you think? Are we entering a technological utopia or an AI cold war?
