Your life according to the news

I sat watching the news a week or so ago and couldn’t help but being worried about the world. Missile tests, war, a family killed in their own home by intruders and so on and so on. Bad news on top of bad news until I sat there scared for myself, my family and the little niche we’ve carved out in the world.

But good news was just around the corner. Apparently there is a whole new way of producing the components in plasma screens making them much cheaper. That’s great, I thought. That way I can see even more misery in high definition. Can’t wait for the price to go down so I can buy one. The missile tests and wars all of a sudden a distant memory, pushed away by the expectation of pixel perfection in my lounge room.

And to top it off, the sport newscast afterwards told of glorious victories against other countries in a multitude of sports. Our well paid athletes had made the country proud and entertained us at the same time.

Today I’m dissecting this behavior and realize that we have turned into victims and consumers and not much else. We then turn to entertainment news and sportcasts to dull our brains into thinking that it is ok.

So what is this all about? I don’t know. Perhaps there is a huge conspiracy as described in The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks. Or perhaps the truth is even more pathetic? Perhaps we’ve just accepted this and turned into mindless drones all by ourselves?

I don’t know. I turn off the computer and look for the remote control. It is Big Brother Eviction night tonight; a double eviction no less. Can’t let a stupid blog entry keep me away from finding out who will leave the Big Brother house. I’ll finish it later…
